This tone and riff idea is straight out of Crossroads territory. The magic comes from mixing minor pentatonic lines with flashes of the major third, especially over dominant chords. That blend of major and minor is a huge part of Clapton’s blues voice. Add those little hammer-ons and chord tones to your pentatonics and the sound instantly comes alive.
