This old-school trick creates a sound you can’t get any other way. Instead of sliding a half step, you use an open string to grab the note above while fretting the note below. That lets both notes ring together and creates a wide, shimmering sound that feels completely different under your fingers. It’s a technique passed down through players like Mississippi John Hurt and Doc Watson, and it works beautifully in fiddle tunes and traditional flatpicking. Once you hear it, it opens up a whole new world of tone and phrasing.
