About this lesson

This riff from “Man in the Box” shows how a tiny chord change can make a huge difference. Instead of a standard power chord, try playing the open low E string together with the 5th fret on the A string. It creates this tense, gritty sound that sits somewhere between a power chord and an E7-type vibe. That little twist is part of what gives the riff its character. When you compare it to a normal power chord, you can hear how much more attitude and tension it adds. From there, the lead line comes straight out of the E minor pentatonic scale, so it’s a great reminder that a lot of classic rock riffs come from very familiar shapes. Small change in the chord, same simple scale, and suddenly you’ve got a riff that feels completely unique. 🎶 Grab the FREE Boss Katana patch I used here: bit.ly/bossmarty Thanks to @BOSSinfoglobal 🎸
